Yes. Anyone can whiten their teeth, however, if there are existing fillings or restorations on your front teeth, these will not change colour as you whiten, and may need to be replaced after your whitening treatment is complete. The Dentist will discuss this with you at your tooth whitening consultation.
The tooth whitening gels contain an active whitening ingredient that penetrates your enamel to get to internal stains. Oxygen is released from the whitening agent to eliminate these stains whitening the entire tooth. As a result, you are left with a brighter, whiter smile.
Generally, immediately after tooth whitening, the colour will fade very slightly and then remain stable for approx. 6 months to a year, sometimes longer. It is recommended for maintenance to touch up your smile every 3-4 weeks with 1-2 applications. Top up gels are available to purchase at a fraction of the cost of the full whitening kit.
Results vary. Some patient’s teeth whiten dramatically in just a few days, while others can take a few months. The majority of people whiten within 2-3 weeks. The more yellow versus the grey color you have in your teeth, the better the bleaching. Grey enamel similar to that of Tetracycline (antibiotic) staining is more difficult to whiten and can take a few months to achieve a good result.
